Three kinds of Winter Garden homes

Winter Garden grew up as a citrus town on the shore of Lake Apopka, and its historic downtown along Plant Street and the West Orange Trail still has homes from the early twentieth century. Around that core are subdivisions built from the 1970s through the 1990s, and to the south, the Horizon West area has added thousands of homes since the 2000s. Each group has different bathroom needs.

Older homes near downtown tend to have small bathrooms, raised wood floors and plumbing that may have been updated piecemeal over the decades. Remodels there focus on making the most of a tight footprint, often with a tub-to-shower conversion, a recessed niche instead of a bulky caddy and a glass panel instead of a curtain. We check the floor framing carefully so the shower pan is supported and sloped correctly.

Homes from the 1980s and 1990s usually have a slab, a tiled stall or tub combo with small tile, and sometimes a corner tub. These are prime candidates for a larger walk-in shower. In the newest Horizon West homes, the house itself is sound, but the shower is typically a production-grade stall, and owners want to upgrade to frameless glass, a bench, a linear drain and better tile.

West Orange water and humidity

Like the rest of Central Florida, Winter Garden draws hard groundwater that leaves mineral spots on glass, chrome and dark tile. The area’s humid summers and frequent afternoon storms keep bathrooms damp, and showers that do not dry quickly tend to grow mildew in the grout.

Every Luxive shower is built over a continuous waterproofing membrane, with a floor pitched to the drain and niches and benches sloped so they shed water. We often recommend larger porcelain tile for fewer grout lines, stain-resistant grout, and coated low-iron glass, which holds up better to hard water. Matte and textured finishes also hide water spots better than polished dark tile. Read more in our waterproofing guide.

City versus county permits, plus HOAs

The City of Winter Garden has its own building department, but a large share of Horizon West, along with other homes with a Winter Garden address, sits in unincorporated Orange County. Which office issues your permit depends on the parcel, and we confirm that for your address before work starts.

Most newer subdivisions in and around Winter Garden have HOAs. Their rules rarely affect interior work directly, but they often limit contractor hours, street parking and where a dumpster can sit. If your HOA requires notice before a project, we will help with what they ask for.

Pricing and consultations

A tub-to-shower conversion in a downtown home and a full primary bath upgrade in Horizon West are very different projects. Our custom shower cost guide explains what drives each one, and our pricing page shows how systems are structured. Request a consultation to get started.

Questions

Winter Garden shower remodel FAQ

Do you remodel showers in Horizon West?

Yes. Horizon West’s newer homes are well suited to turning a builder-grade stall into a custom, fully waterproofed shower.

Is my Winter Garden address in the city or the county for permits?

It varies, especially in Horizon West. We look up your parcel and confirm the right permitting office during planning.

Can a small downtown bathroom fit a walk-in shower?

Often, yes, by using the existing tub space. A single fixed glass panel and a recessed niche make a compact shower feel larger.
