A shower remodel in an established city
Winter Park is one of the older communities in the Orlando area, and its housing shows it. Streets near Park Avenue and Rollins College hold homes from the 1920s and 1930s, the neighborhoods spreading out toward the Winter Park Chain of Lakes filled in through the 1940s, 50s and 60s, and many original houses have since been replaced by larger new homes on the same lots. A single block can include a 1950s block ranch with its original pink-tile bath next to a house finished a few years ago.
For older Winter Park homes the master bath was often an afterthought: a compact room with a five-foot tub, a small window and a single vanity. The usual goal is to turn that tub alcove, sometimes together with an adjoining linen closet, into a walk-in shower with a bench, a niche and frameless glass. In homes with raised wood floors we check the framing and plan the shower pan so the floor stays flat and the slope to the drain is right. In newer homes the bathroom is already generous, and the work tends to be about upgrading finishes and adding a properly built, larger shower.
Lakes, humidity and hard water
Much of Winter Park sits between lakes, and the air stays humid for most of the year. Bathrooms here dry out slowly, which is hard on cement grout, caulk joints and any wood trim close to the shower. Add Central Florida’s hard, mineral-heavy water and clear glass panels can cloud within weeks if they are not protected.
Our approach is to keep water out of the wall and off the surfaces that are hard to clean. That means a continuous waterproofing membrane behind and beneath the tile, a sloped bench and niche sills so water does not pool, and a drain layout matched to the floor. We often suggest larger porcelain or sintered stone panels to cut down on grout lines, and coated low-iron glass that sheds mineral spotting more easily. Natural marble remains popular in Winter Park; we will explain its upkeep honestly so you can choose with clear expectations. The waterproofing guide covers how the layers fit together.
Permits and historic districts
Winter Park runs its own building and permitting department, so properties inside city limits generally permit through the city rather than Orange County. Some streets fall within locally designated historic districts. Interior bathroom remodels rarely raise design questions, but if a project also touches a window or an exterior wall, it is worth checking with the city early. We confirm the requirements for your address as part of planning.
Condominiums near Park Avenue and along the lakes usually have association rules about contractor hours, elevator use, noise and debris removal, and some require proof of insurance before work begins. Share your association’s rules with us and we will build the schedule around them.
Pricing and getting started
Winter Park projects vary widely in scope, from a straightforward tub-to-shower conversion to a full primary bath rebuild. Read our custom shower cost guide for what drives the budget, see how systems are structured on the pricing page, then schedule a consultation so we can see the room.

Questions
Winter Park shower remodel FAQ
Can you convert the tub in my older Winter Park home to a walk-in shower?
In most cases, yes. We look at the plumbing location, the floor framing or slab and the room’s ventilation before recommending a layout.
Does Winter Park or Orange County handle my permit?
Homes inside Winter Park city limits generally permit through the city. We verify the jurisdiction for your specific address during planning.
Is marble a good choice for a Winter Park shower?
It can be, as long as you are comfortable with sealing and gentle cleaners. If you want less upkeep, porcelain that looks like marble is a strong alternative.
